Effectiveness of HVLS Fans With And Without HVAC Systems

When commercial or industrial businesses install HVAC systems, it might feel that all the necessary requirements for keeping facilities cool have been met. While HVAC systems are among the most effective systems for keeping a facility cool, they can be more effective when combined with HVLS fans.

What is an HVLS Fan?

An HVLS fan is a high volume low speed fan that will circulate the air in the room in large volumes. It is designed to improve the air quality and deters pests. Also, an HVLS fan helps improve the perception of cold that is experienced by individuals due to how it helps the moisture on one’s skin evaporate. HVLS fans also prevent hot air from remaining on an individual’s skin. However, HVLS fans make HVAC systems significantly more effective.

How the HVAC Works

HVAC systems cool the air by extracting heat from the air using a refrigerant. The hot air is then expelled outside, while the cool air is circulated into the building. Many HVAC systems come with a fan that blows the chilled air into the building. However, the HVAC system does not circulate air nearly as much as the HVLS system. Combined the HVAC and HVLS systems also help to cut down on humidity, which reduces the spread of mold and disease.

Circulating Cold Air

HVLS fans help circulate cold air that is generated by an HVAC system into the room. By doing this, individuals will feel cooler and business owners will receive fewer requests to lower the temperature from employees or customers. HVLS fans move the cool air over the bodies of individuals. Given that the cool air is much colder than the skin of the individual, the air gives a cooling effect as it carries body heat away. The colder the air, the more that the air cools the body.

Using Both the HVLS and the HVAC Systems

Both the HVAC and HVLS systems work better when used together. The HVLS system will make a room feel almost 10 degrees cooler when it operates without an HVAC system, but it will still be circulating only hot air. With an HVAC system, it will not only produce the windchill effect but will also be circulating colder air.

Using Windchill to Cool a Hot Building

Most people are familiar with how the windchill effect makes the winter feel colder. With the HVAC system combined with the HVLS system, the same effect is created during hot summer days. However, this windchill effect also can be generated without the HVAC system and companies that are looking for a more affordable way to cool large facilities can first install the more affordable HVLS system.

HVLS Brings Significant Savings

HVAC systems are among the most expensive appliance in terms of energy consumption. For this reason, anything that can reduce the amount of energy that the HVAC system uses will help dramatically lower the costs of the business. Using less energy will also help the business become greener since HVLS fans consume much less energy than HVAC systems.
